Dr. Robert Hahn Visits the Higgins Grinding Technology Center

Over 30 years ago, Dr. Robert Hahn co-wrote the book on grinding technology; today we welcomed him to tour the Higgins Grinding Technology Center (HGTC) at the Saint-Gobain Northboro Research & Development center. The HGTC is dedicated to developing advanced grinding solutions for the world's leading manufacturers and continues to utilize many of the methodologies Dr. Hahn spent his career pioneering.

At 101 years old, Bob Hahn has transformed the grinding industry and paved the way for the research being done at Saint-Gobain today. Over the years Bob has served as a consultant at Saint-Gobain and the HGTC as well as being a valued mentor and trainer to many Saint-Gobain researchers. “The HGTC continues to carry Bob’s work forward as part of our research as well as the foundation for our training programs,” said R&D Director, Karen Conley, who oversees the Higgins Grinding Technology Center.

From his creation of new understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of material removal in grinding to his development of methodologies for the reduction or elimination of chatter and vibration, Dr. Hahn’s work is part of the fabric of development for the grinding industry. As technology continues to evolve much of what Bob established is used in the cutting-edge technology and innovation at the HGTC that supports all types of abrasive products; bonded, coated and superabrasives and all finishing processes; grinding, lapping, polishing and Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) used in any number of high performance situations.
